I love the way mice will walk up to a predator and say, "Hi! What are you? Are you good to eat? Wanna play?"

On the program today, Shadow Of The Colossus will be reenacted for us with a field mouse and a cat.

It actually kinda looks like the mouse already won. The cat's in "I am not aggressive" position. Rodents do the same belly-up thing to signal nonaggression, so maybe the mouse is assuming that the cat is safe. (Or maybe the cat rolled over and ate the mouse.)

My three house cats were like that with rodents on the porch and in the yard. We fed squirrels and there was one little female roof rat who used to come up to the feeder once in a while. Although one of the cats was a hunter, they had a truce with rodents on our property and I'd often find cats and squirrels snoozing on the porch, touching noses, grooming each other, or playing tag (with the squirrels and cats taking turns chasing each other). One of the squirrels was particular friends with one of the cats.

But--once the rodent stepped off the property into the street, it became prey.

It was very odd but the animals seemed to have their rules well worked out.

cats also roll over on thier sides like that when the thing they're playing with is being boring and trying to pretend it doesnt exist by keeping very very still. my cat anyway, when birds he brings in the house to play with are being slow and boring he flops down nearby to have a nap until it tries to make a break for it.
