That's actually a really interesting idea from an evolutionary biology perspective. Do you know if that comic's author happen to mention anything about research along these lines?
Not along those lines, but there's all sorts of evolutionary theory ticking along in the background of that comic; for instance, a one-off explanation of how female attraction to philandering males may not be selected out by evolution. (Given by an anthropomorphised/uplifted wolf to a veternarian while the two are a dinner-date hosted by French ninjas.) A fair amount of work on ecosystems, too.
