I suspect what you really need to be able to do is trace the outlines produced by your projector. Not to say it isn't neat.

Hmm, on the other hand, lines projected by a projector onto a rippled background, lines that hit objects in the background should appear smaller to the viewer than lines in the foreground and such. I would imagine you could design some soft of computer program to calculate the distance and necessary thickness of each line. Still pretty damned crazy.
