STOCKHOLM, Sweden - For 40 years it has been torched, vandalized, had its legs cut off and even been run over by a car. But officials in the Swedish city of Gavle are guaranteeing that this year's giant straw Christmas goat - the victim of Sweden's most violent yule tradition - will survive unscathed.
I can't pick the funniest part of this article. It's all funny.
I do have to wonder what the good people of Gavle have against a 43-foot tall straw goat, however.
I've been following this thing for the last three years, catching little articles which end with heart-wrenching quotes like "We were so close." and "Only two more days."
And each time I snicker a little bit, because after 40 years, don't you think setting the sucker on fire IS the tradition?
The picture I saw this year also haa a giant pointy fence around it.
Another article: http://www.thelocal.se/5694/20061204/ "It's not possible. We have made tests using petrol, oil, everything. It's not possible to burn the goat," said Lorensson. Those sound like the words of a man throwing down the gauntlet.
Sort of related news from Gävle Bus runs amok in Gävle http://www.thelocal.se/5554/20061120/ "...An alert bus driver in Gävle, central Sweden, was commended on Sunday after his bus started spontaneously and ran amok around the town centre..." I swear to god I immediately thought the bus was trying to run over the goat.
