This reminds me of when movie reviewers Siskel and Ebert were effectively put into the 90's American Godzilla movie by first name and by similar actor portrayals - see the Mayor and his assistant Gene - as "payback" for giving Independence Day (ID4) a bad review a couple of years prior to Godzilla.
Crichton's a chiavionistic pig and has been since his first book - Andromada strain which had absolutely no women in it at all. Jurassic Park was re-written for the movie to change the women characters to make them less wimpy but when he writes on his own the women are useless or backstabbing. After the Sphere where the only woman to survive until the end was the only person to refuse to "forget" the ultimate power I quit reading his books.

Thank you.
(I've had arguments where people have completely dismissed the idea that Beth did that. I was starting to think I was imagining things.)
On the one hand, I would be the last to deny that the pleasure of having horrible horrible things happen to people you are pissed at is one of the pleasures to be obtained from writing.
On the other hand: tacky, tacky, *tacky*. (And, apparently, bad writing, if the character does just show up and leave as described.) At least make the name a little more obscure. It's not like the name "Crowley" lacks for words you can associate with it.
Todd McFarlane was sued like crazy when he was dumb enough to willingly name a horribly evil mobster after a hockey player. What he had against the player, I don't know.

(I'd use Alistair Michaels, myself.)
