I'm really not too sure the events are similiar enough to say history is repeating itself. Comparing the Russian experience in Afghanistan to what the US is doing in Iraq is probably closer to the truth.

I don't know, I think "throwing a bunch of soldiers that you really can't afford to lose in a hopeless ill-planned assault over the objections of the commanders who actually know what's happening on the ground, which, when it fails, those same commanders say will break your army in exactly the same way that Lee's army was broken after Gettysburg" is a pretty close analogue.

Not to mention the similarities in policy and practice between the CSA and the current USA.

...that image has hooked up with the slogan "Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people, and kill them," so I'm not going to get either of them out of my head for the rest of the day.

And I'm trying to filk "When Johnny Comes Marching Home".

I dono. I'd say making and then implementing bad strategy in the face of facts/experienced people with valid input is a time honored tradition for them.

It's universal middle management. It's just more dramatic when a country/army fails rather than a company.

True on both fronts, but when a country or military does it, it can cost people their lives.
