Seeing as he's still in prison, he's not quite an ex-con.

Except, I totally read that wrong. The post is written in the present, but it's apparently a re-post of something. I have no clue how the hell I missed that.

I wrote about forty posts to an e-group from behind the razorwire while I was locked up. All of those posts will be included in the book I am damn near done with except this one. I can't use this one because it describes my crime.

Seemed a shame to waste it.

I left the tense as present in order to leave the post as close as possible to the original version.

Can you even mention, anywhere in the book, that you were in jail for drunk driving (and any associated charges), or do you have to publish this without any context at all as to why you actually there?

naw, the law is pretty clear about it. If i make the crime part of the story then i am benefitting from it if the book sells.

Does mentioning what the crime was, without any of the details, purely as background ("I was in jail for X years because I hit a man while driving drunk") really constitute making it part of the story?

I understand the reason for the law, but I'm surprised at the extreme of not being allowed to mention what you were convicted of at all.
