Oh, and you agree that the built-in "Defender" software has the right to delete anything it wants, at any time, on orders from Microsoft's servers.

(At least it's not as bad as the EULA on Amazon Unbox)

Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.org) is the easiest way (I would rank it's difficulty in installing and configuring about equal to windows 2000, although obviously there's a learning curve since things don't work the same way as in windows), and anivair has gotten world of Warcraft to run on Linux, he's an easy going gamer who should be able to help you.

I can get Ubuntu to self boot and run from the self loading CD I made awhile back, but would need partitioning software (and documentation) to put it on my laptop PC along with Windows XP (which works just fine). Links, please...

Dapper was the current stable release at the time I built the CD; Edgy was in late beta.

I remember that burning the Dapper CD was a pain, and of course I took the instructions from a website somewhere. Still have the burning software...

Well, dapper is certainly functional, and you can do an upgrade to edgy once it's installed. It just takes a bit more work than the other way would normally, but in your case I guess that might be worth it.

Well, if you need to repartition your hard drive you will need to do a defrag, otherwise it won't be able to make space.

I'm defragging now--had to remove the virtual memory disk cache to allow a full defrag, which means the defrag is slow. But--I can have a bigger partition after the defrag.

since ubuntu is like debian, it has partitioning in the installer. i think. I installed debian on my laptop alongside XP (which i'm about to trash now anyway as i hardly game on it anymnore) but the debian installer is perfectly capable of partitioning.

I'm upgrading my computer in the summer. I'm definately thinking about going with Ubuntu now, if WoW can work. WoW and inertia are the biggest things tying me to Windows right now..

They're pretty much the same thing, it's just the programs that are installed by default are different.

I am slowly transitioning into Linux, using windows only for specific programs (arcmap) or games (Spore). When i get into a situation when Vista is necessary to run those programs, i will install Vista over xp. Odds are that will be 5+ years from now and _some_ of the more heinous bugs will have been worked out.

*note* Didn't pay a cent for my legit copy of Vista, i'm not _that_ foolish.
