Let me make it perfectly clear from the git-go ... I hate dinosaurs. I know they have been dead for some sixty million years but that in no way diminishes my rancor for those stupid, overgrown lizards.

Um...since when don't kids learn that paleontology is the study of dinosaurs, and archeology deals with ancient civilizations?

This guy is a moron on the second paragraph, for the reasons jsbowden outlines above. I got snitty at people who were confused over this when I was five. My girlfriend, doing her BSc (Hons.) in palaeontology, gets shitty when people think she is an archaeologist.

I mean, really.

I've got to admit that his punchline was pretty awesome, though.

(That your girlfriend runs into people who think she is an archeologist suggests to me that he might very possibly be meeting people who say "Huh! Archeology! That covers dinosaurs, right?")

He's a moron. I've never, ever had the problem which he's complaining of, but I've had the "palaeontology is ancient artifacts as well, right?" thing ALL THE DAMN TIME.
