The dog had the correct number of ears. It's just that one wasn't getting proper circulation :P
Although one would HOPE the owner would notice the dog being in pain and check out the ear, sometimes dogs can be really sneaky about being miserable. Some dogs need to be sedated before being groomed, too - so if the dog was acting differently, the owner may have chalked it up to drugs.
The article doesn't seem to say how long after the grooming it took to notice. She's had the ear in a bag for "weeks" but that's AFTER making the horrible discovery.
You'd also be surprised how hard it can be to notice crap like that in the first place. It's like the eyes expect to see two ears on a dog, so they automatically put 'em there, or something.
We used to have a one-eared wire-haired dachshund named Vinnie, short for Vincent Van Gogh, who had lost his ear as a puppy at the kennel where he was bred because of a fight (with a fence between them) between his mother and another dog - his ear was sticking through the fence, and got bitten right off.
Anyhow, when new people would see him, pet him, etc., a lot of the time they wouldn't even notice anything different until we pointed out that his name was short for Vincent Van Gogh because he only had one ear, at which point people would usually do a double-take, and only then notice that, why yes, he only had one ear.
