This strange "Canada" places appears to have immigration control and it's own laws. How odd. - from the San Francisco Chronicle.

Newsflash: We only let Bush in because he's a head of state. He'd get dropped at immigration for his current criminal record at any other time. We just can't block current heads of state for being clueless drunken assholes, or we'd have nobody for OUR clueless drunken assholes to talk to.

and yet people in america take the ability to travel to canada for granted.. i dont get how it got to the point that crossing into america warrents metaking off my shoes and them doing a full background history into me.. and i usually get stopped because my dual citizenship comes into play. im a portugese canadian, i hold citizenship in both countries through proper legal means (both my parents are portugese there fore i can ualify for citizenship) and every time i go to the states i get asked 100 questions about this.. so i think its time for fair play.. people want a more secure america they shouldnt be suprised that a more secure america has lead to every other country being more secure through the sharing of data.

no one ever thinks of the full implications of their actions when they are making demands..

A marijuana possession from 1975 is reason enough for Canada to bar access to US Citizens? This doesn't seem slightly silly to you?

For marijuana? Yes, that strikes me as silly. At the same time, the offended tone of the article amuses the hell out of me.

That's because CW Nevius is a douche. He might as well go on about his constitutional right to travel to Canada.

I agree, especially since there's a link to the official website which states what you need to do to attempt to get a minister's "approval of rehabilitation" so you can enter Canada. It's very clear. As far as just entering the country with no hassle, in this day and age I figured that was no longer the case, and I already have my passport for an upcoming trip there.

Does it strike me as sillier than Homeland Security holding me for 2 hours and nearly causing me to miss my flight for a green card that's been missing for 6 years, and invalid for 11?

Does it strike me as sillier than my friend being denied entry to the US for having a perfectly valid, but non-machine-readable Italian passport?

Does it strike me as sillier than US customs requiring holders of certain passports to submit to retinal and fingerprint scans?

Not really, no.

Certain passports? Who doesn't get a guernsey?

I'm Canadian, and I've never had to have it done, but I've seen people with British, French, and German passports having retinal scans taken while going through US customs.

Australian, too, from personal experience.

Mind you, I have no particular desire to go to the US at the moment. I'll try and keep it that way until their medication takes hold.

Sorry, what I meant to say was that as an Australian I was fingerprinted, not the other way round.

I'm not perfectly fine with why they're rejecting people, but I'm happy to see them checking to see if there are reasons to reject people.

It's not so much that I'm fine with our policies now, it's more an appreciation of the cosmic justice that American tourists are getting to know what it's been like for foreigners to enter the US for the past 5-6 years.

If only this would make the US gov't rethink their own stupidity. If this really turned into that big of a problem, such that it affected tourism dollars coming into the US, this might have more of an effect on that rethink than any rational arguments. Not that it's going to happen. It's a shame people are surprised that this is the reciprocal of what the US started. Maybe if they'd thought about it, they'd have opposed it in the first place.

And yes, it does require a shift in thinking for those of us who grew up on the border and spent huge amounts of our time in Canada. I'm curious what effect it will have on people who have homes in both countries, since that's pretty common. People would just drive across the border to have dinner with friends. People spent weekends, even entire summers and never thought about it. We used to think it was pretty cool our countries got along so well they effectively had an open border. Not anymore, I guess.

Could you possibly keep George W. Bush from entering *our* country? That _would_ be useful.
