Put on your drinking caps: Ultra-orthodox Jewish men stagger down a Mea Shearim neighborhood street after ultra-heavy partying in Jerusalem. One of the precepts of the Purim holiday -- which commemorates the rescue of Jews from genocide in ancient Persia -- is excessive alcohol consumption.

Any excuse to get wasted is a good excuse.

Seconded.

I wonder if I dressed up like that next year and joined them... would they notice?

Drinking wine to the point of "not knowing the difference (ad delo yada) between the phrases 'Cursed is Haman' and 'Blessed is Mordechai'"

It's so nice to see a religion that specifies exactly how drunk you're supposed to get on the public drunkenness holiday. (Haman is the Persian badguy, by the way).

Yeah, I always liked that clause. It's similar to Passover, where the mandatory minimum of drink is four glasses of wine.

*blinka*

I get tipsy on ONE glass of wine. I'd be UNDER THE TABLE at 4.

you are expected to drink enough that you can't differentiate good from bad, or was it good from evil? not sure if that's excessive... but not sure if there's much beyond that.

Apparently, Purim is the only day where it's OK for Jews to crossdress, so long as they're good and stinkin' drunk.
