British Airways has issued an apology to a first class passenger on a flight from Delhi to London last week who woke up to find himself next to a dead body.

The cabin crew had used an unoccupied seat in his row for the body of an elderly woman who had died in the crowded economy section about three hours after takeoff.

Of course I can see why that's extremely off-putting, but how does Trinder think other airlines handle such a situation?

Actually, some other airlines apparently have special storage facilities for just such an occasion. BA uses the space for other things, like more economy seating or something.

They've apologised now? There was an article in the paper on Sunday about how they originally told him to just get over it.

This sounds kind of lame. I suppose they didn't want her in the jump seat by the flight attendants. Or couldn't get her into the cargo hold. What are the rules about people dying on commercial aircraft?

I don't think they have any rules, they just discourage it.

You may wish to read this post on the jump seat issue... and elsewhere in there it's mentioned that there's no in-flight access to the cargo hold.

-- Steve's thinking that if the body kept sliding out of a First Class sleeper seat, it sure as heck ain't staying put in a jump seat.

Meh. I would have preferred if they woke me and let me know that i was sleeping next to a corpse, and the ride just became free for me, but frankly, if she dosent stink, what do i care? Its just meat at this point.

On her gravestone the inscription reads: "I've died and been bumped to First Class."

Could be true. -_^
