Don't be silly, Atlas was the walking tank.

Nooo, the Atlas was the walking target that could hit back.

I mean really. You put pilots you don't want to come back into those because they got singled out for multiple LRM 20 salvos.

#1: At LRM range, I'd much rather have an Awesome than an Atlas, unless it's the oh-so-terrifying Atlas-K. Atlases only get scary at 9 hexes, and *really* scary at 3.
#2: Multiple LRM20 salvos? Who gives a shit, it's an ATLAS. That's an average of 12 damage a hit, at a range where 50% hits would be startlingly good, against 304 points of oh-so-tasty armor.

(For consideration: Nobody ever expects Awesomes to kick. They're always all like "Wow, I'm at 1 hex from the Awesome, now the PPCs can't focus and he takes a +3 to hit me!" and I'm always like "Whoopy! I'll fire those PPCs at something else and just PUT MY FOOT THROUGH YOUR LEFT LEG BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!". Also, everyone made fun of my Urbanmechs until they actually fought me. Then they tended to cry.)

The point being that an Atlas generally got tagged with 'kill the fuck out of it from as far away as humanly possible' More so than any other mech I've seen played.

I'm okay with that, personally. If I'm using an Atlas, it's because I *expect* you to hammer it senseless. It's built to be hammered senseless and keep going, and if you're hitting my Atlas, that means you're *not* hitting anything else I'm using.

My main dislike for the Atlas comes from it being so damn slow and having only one gun that reaches beyond 9 hexes. The Atlas variant that drops the AC/20 and the MLAS(r) for 2xPPC and 4 more HS? PURE SEX. I would have that Atlas' babies.

That is in fact a truly scary piece of death in 100 ton boots. No questions.

Also, Atlas hold the record for most satisfying head shots. Nothing like watching 100 tons of someone else's stuff hit the table as salvage.

The downside is that you have to think in German.
