No one can find a story in a legitimate Japanese newspaper. The main characters and circumstances have already changed from one source to the next.
And even though I have never seen a leopard in person, I wouldn't mistake it for a domestic cat, nor would a Japanese person be confused about what a sheep looks like.
My Japanese roomie in college was stunned to see free-range squirrels running all over the campus, as they are only in zoos where she grew up, but she still knew what the heck they were. :)
