Dang, you post faster than I type.

Soooo... what's the deal with the chesty-light thing? I totally never heard about that.

In some variations the chest light thing was to keep his heart going after taking hugely traumatic damage. Which isn't as cool as paralysis, but whatever.

Though as it turns out he wasn't paralyzed till later, so I'll shut up now.

And since he's Tony Fucking Stark, it glows.

OKay, went and googled. I don't keep TV at home. Thus I'm not up on these things. And clearly I need to catch up on reading People magazine.

In my defense: he ain't cute at all without a beard. No, really. But I guess I'm wired that way. Guys without face hair usually don't do a thing for me.

ok. Obviously something's coming out this year, I figured that out from the file name. I presume it's a movie of some sorts. It doesn't look like a take on Iron Man unless I totally never heard that Tony had a glowey chest implant itemajig. And frankly this looks more like a forge than a billionare industrialists prototyping laboratory.

Do you mind sharing the knowledge with us mere peons as to what, exactly, this is, so we may squee properly?

No, looks like true origin story to me. IIRC, Tony was in Vietnam when he originally invented the Iron Man suit as a way to survive after being wounded by shrapnel

This time, it's Afghanistan, not Vietnam.

But yup. Heart wound, builds his own prosthetic, decides "why stop there" and makes the full iron man suit.

Vietnam was, itself, a retcon.

Vietnam was the original. It was later retconned to the Gulf War.

Yeah, it's true. My mind had conflated the Iron Man origin story with the Korean War. Oops.

Oh, you know. Spoilt industrialist billionnaire, touring a country that provides mad cheap labour, vehicle goes over a landmine, shrapnel in the chest, captured by enemy, and next thing you know there's this sudden urgent necessity for some kind of magnetized carefully designed doohickey to keep the heart from getting ribboned by the chunks of metal.

...the fact that he was allowed to build this in captivity is strictly due to the fact that his captor was an arrogant evil overlord who had him (and the requisite father-figure) in captivity so that they would build nifty stuff for him. The equipment wasn't great, but he *did* manage to hammer out what he needed; he and the father figure built the suit in secret, and the father-figure sacrificed himself (those guys die a lot, have you noticed?) so that Tony was able to get into the suit when the overlord-type showed up angry.

Thus was born Iron Man.

I stand corrected on two particulars:

(1) Wasn't a billionaire at the time. Just a genius. And was touring the country to see how his new transistors could aid the American war effort.

(2) Father figure sacrified himself so Tony could have time to *charge* the suit, not just put it on.

Here, origin issue cover.

Yeah, really. It's a modern film, and that's old people music.

Expect A Perfect Circle or Blink 182 to do a cover, though, and they'll use THAT for the closing credits.

After the Beatles.

Actually, at least the beatles were catchy.

Actually, it goes to the modern look shortly into the movie, but they start with the old-school iron-man suit.

The new-school one is here:

...you expect half of a scene from the trailer to be good?

('cause the movie was bad, I know this, and I knew this going in, but the flaming undead cowboy/biker duo going down the road side-by-side was as shown. Though I *still* wonder what the horse thinks about all this.[1])
