At least they're honest. The U.S. Mint would come up with some long and involved piece of bullshit to cover up the fact that they did it because they thought it'd be a cool idea and nobody told them not to.
Well, my only thinking was that in any situation where you will have x amount of gold that you know isn't going anywhere, the only reason against doing something like this would be tax prudence. I wouldn't want to find out that tax money went into producing this.
It also made me think of Athens' method of clothing their statue of Athena, which was definitely VERY cool.
