I wonder if a much much finer one could be made to use powdered sugar?

I guess that there's no reason why not (if everything was to scale) except that the product would be, oh, an inch long?

If you're willing to live with really long print times, you could probably make one with fairly fine res and powdered sugar even on that large scale. It'd also be a lot more expensive, though, because you really need high-accuracy metal frames and more accurate steppers and all that, and those aren't cheap in large-scale. Something with fairly fine res and up to 6-12 inches you could probably still do with mostly salvage components, like old printer/plotter parts.
