Eurovision 2007, recapped

Contestant reviews like:
Latvia
BONAPARTI.LV
"Questa Notte"

This year Doctor Doom has sent an unnecessary number of men in top hats to serenade us with boring opera. It's like a funeral for credible music being attended by the assassins themselves, Il Divo. Actually there's more of these guys than there are in Il Divo (every time you think they're done, another one walks out onto the stage) so I suppose that makes them quantifiably worse. If this pleases Doom, I don't know why. Perhaps he's punishing us.

Lithuania
4FUN
"Love Or Leave"

With a name like 4Fun, I was absolutely sure this would be a breezy boyband bouncing around in a barely coordinated fashion in light pastel sleeveless vests and baggy white combats. Sadly, no - it could hardly be further from it. 4Fun is in fact a rather glum woman being terribly earnest in the presence of a guitar. Apparently 'fun' means something else in Lithuania. On reflection, I suppose I should have guessed as much.

So good. I wish we got Eurovision, sometimes.

There's something special about Eurovision. The nations that are newer at it seem to take their entries more seriously, much to the hilarity of all, and the ones that aren't seem to take it as an opportunity to see who can field the worst song. Unfortunately, I don't live over that way any more, so I haven't seen it in the last few years either.

No, no you don't. Wogan likes to think he's funny, but he's not. Although, I suppose it does add a bit to the already train-wreck-like quality of the whole enterprise.

I think he's one of those love em or hate em people. My extreme age puts me in the former camp I fear.

Trivia: The Norwegian offering this year was evidently in Spanish, a language understood only by a few hundred Norwegians, if that. (Norway is the second most ethnically homogenous country in the western world, after Iceland which amazes by being populated at all.)

You might not have that many native Spanish speakers, but Spanish as a third language seems to be as common in Norway as it is in Sweden.

I blame this on the sexy immigrant Latino badboys. I bet a lot of girls take Spanish because of them. And of course, many Norwegians spend some weeks each year in Spain, but mostly in places where the Spaniards already speak Swedish fairly well.

Well, if your choice is between Spanish, French and German (the ones offered in Swedish schools at junior high levels), Spanish is probably the language you'll have most use of in the future.

There is always that, at least unless you plan to study in Germany or Eastern Europe. Our cultural contact with France is minimal, for some reason. For some obscure reason, you can't learn Finnish or Russian, both of which are neighboring countries with which we have a decent amount of commerce. Perhaps the Cold War never ended in the Ministry of Education (or whatever they're called this year).

To be fair, the total population of Lithuania is like 3 mil. The best we can do is cheesy shenanigans.

Here's the most memorable clip ever from the Eurovision. Lill Lindfors as the compere in 1985.

I'm sorry, none of these hold a candle to "Vampires Are Alive".

So true, and yet such a shame.

Because I have this can of gasoline expressly for that song, and nobody is showing up with a candle.
