The first game was neat, but it had an abysmally bad interface. There's a reason why multiplayer Starcraft favours twitchgamers; the person with a better memory for hotkeys and you can go to whatever's going to finish and then give it new orders the fastest, wins. There's no strategy involved, just pure clicking faster than the other guy, and the faster rush wins.
Starcraft was released more than two years after Total Annihilation, and not only did it learn nothing from the near-perfect interface of TA, it was actively worse, making deliberate design decisions to *hamper* the player.
Um, TA was released September '97, Starcraft was released early '98, they were in development at the same time. I'll give you TA was technically better, but Starcraft was more fun. There were many compare/contrasts in my friends gaming mags at the time, and it always seemed to be a score draw.
Plus it was the second RTS I ever played after Warcraft.

And no improvements, with the expansion.
Or with Warcraft III.
Or, indeed, with any RTS before Supreme Commander.
