Take the way my east coast name compatriot feels about cats and multiply that by some uncountably large number. That's how I feel about raccoons.
Raccoons and ants are the only living things other than humans that inspire irrational emotion in me.

In fact, yes. Or, at least, it's probably the biggest reason. There is this palpable greed in both species, and with raccoons you have the additional veneer of (apparent) disdain or even vindictiveness.
Very perceptive, nice catch.
