EDIT: Apparently many people don't think this is as cute as I do.

Click the image or the above words for a description. This is an anesthetised cat, not an injured or dead one. The boy is vaccuuming in preparation for a standard spay/neuter, at a vet's, and the cat was just fine afterwards.

could you maybe put that behind a cut? That cat looks an awful lot like my Rogue.

The cat's anethestised, not dead or hurt. It's a prep for an operation.

But done, regardless.

Yes, context makes a difference!

Clicking the picture gets you the story. It's prep for a standard spay/neuter.

Yeah, I noticed that, but my first reaction was a bit wtf-y.

That would require knowing that the picture is a link, and then clicking on it. At first glance, it looks rather torturous for the little kitty.

There are probably a lot of things that vets do that I am very, very glad I don't have to witness.

Man, talk about cat bondage! :) Glad to hear its just standard spray/neuter stuff. I wouldn't have taken the time to click on the photo normally. - Afraid of what I might read.

It blows my mind that people hate that picture till they know it's "standard" and then it's ok. What kind if warped double standard is that? The context that they dislike is based on their own ignorance and presupposition. Self loathing, anyone?

"It's ok . . . I'm a Dentist!"

Because it's not only "standard" but also a) for a good reason (even for the cat's interests, as well as the humans') and b) apparently under anasthesia, which means it's not basically freaking out, struggling, etc., as one would assume would be the case normally.

Sorry, but I think you're hunting a wee bit hard for the double-standards here.

It's clearly not struggling or freaking out, just based on the pic. It looks, if anything, like it's rather relaxed and possibly enjoying itself (which I thought might be the issue when I saw it was behind the cut). Admittedly, a caption or subject heading to contextualize it might have been helpful in any case.

Enh, to me it looked like it could well have been freaking out with the slightly-gaping-open mouth, and you can't really tell if it's struggling based on how tightly stretched out it is. And there was also the possibility of it just being dead and posed.

I suppose it could look ambiguous. To me, the giveaway was that the toes weren't splayed, the tendons didn't appear very tight, and the ears weren't flat against her head. You're right though, that doesn't eliminate the possibility of Princess being dead (although she'd have to be fairly fresh).

Sorry if that sounds kind of... cold. I do love cats, and biology is an interest of mine (oh god, that sounds horrible), so I look for the subtle things like that. Truth be told, while I noticed nuanced aspects of the cat's posture, I didn't notice the ropes until someone pointed them out. :S

My first thought was that old urban legend about the lady whose dog brings the corpse of the neighbour's pet rabbit to her door. It's not mangled--she figures broken neck, dogs so that--so she washes it, dries it, and sneaks it back into the rabbit hutch in their back yard after dark. Figures it'll look like he died in his sleep.

Next day the neighbour's family is freaking out, because they'd buried the rabbit earlier yesterday. Her dog had just dug it up.

Not hate. Are unnerved by.

I mean, I'm sure you've seen the picture elsewhere--it'd rather blow my mind if you were making generalizations based on *checks timestamp* the comments of four people, none of which actually express hate for the picture.

But I still think it's a bit of a leap to define "I've never seen a cat treated like that and the tying down splayed is not something you normally do to an animal and while there's no blood and it doesn't seem to be screaming or struggling it might very well be dead and seeing dead animals (that may or may not remind us of one we care about very much) being posed and manhandled and prodded is just a little unsettling" as "self-loathing".

Hmh. Wanna talk projection? Presupposition? Anything? :)

> What kind of warped double standard is that?

The same kind of warped double standard that lets people take their adolescent children to the dentist or undergo surgery without screaming, freaking out, crying, suffering PTSD, and pressing charges for aggravated assault and imprisonment being the order of the day.

Ah, context. Isn't it lovely?
