One must be very careful of little voices telling one what to do: it is quite possible that what one thinks is the voice of God, isn't. One of the functions of a religious community is supposed to be to moderate people's rash impulses to believe whatever comes into their head, providing a reference point; a community that encourages them instead is, in my view, irresponsible.

To his credit, the pastor contacted the authorities rather than trying to deal with this lunatic directly. Once the situation has reached this level of urgency, swift and certain action is called for to prevent further harm, and there are religious people who sometimes refuse to accept that.

Okay, so as long as all the insane crazies are in lockstep about what, exactly, constitutes being "acceptably crazy" and makes sure nobody gets "too crazy," that's the beauty of religion?
