He didn't get the thirty years for spamming, he got the thirty years for spamming, selling illicit and dubious pharmaceuticals, defying multiple court orders, making death threats against witnesses, attempting to hire a hitman, and then saying so to the judge's face.

The key paragraph about Smith's conviction is this one:

Man, spammers really are as dumb as they look in the inbox.

He could have gotten the 30 years for indecent conduct with a horse, I don't care. What I care about is a spammer going to jail.
