Quoth [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll: "Undocumented travel within the US makes Baby Jesus cry.

Personally, I think even this is far too lax. People should need permission from their local branch of Homeland Defense to travel outside their designated home and work zones. And maybe everyone should wear GPS units that report their location to DHS, just in case."

They already do this in China. In addition, over there, once you've been assigned to a region, you have to stay in that region unless you go to a university outside of your region, marry someone out of your region, or have a job outside of your region (this is the only way you can get 're-assigned'). If you travel to another province, you are considered a 'foreigner', even though you're still inside China AND you have to report how long you plan on staying in that non-assigned area (I'm pretty sure there is a limit on the number of days you are allowed to be outside of your region). If you exceed your time, they will track you down and you'll be in HUGE amounts of trouble.

And lets not even get started on if you try to leave the country if you're a citizen of China...

Fuck them. I am a us citizen. I do not have to show someone a fucking ID card in my own fucking country while minding my own business on public fucking property. Im pretty sure I would go to jail over this.

I see that even a bunch of the states are up in arms about this:

> More than half the nation's state legislatures have passed symbolic
> legislation denouncing the plan, and some have penned bills expressly
> forbidding compliance.

Things like that make me wonder what planet the folks from DHS are from. It seems less like they thought this through and instead came up with this idea in the middle of the night and decided to force it on everybody to satisfy their own agenda.
