While nevertheless fucked up, that article only mentions briefly that it was a jury trial.

The judge being asleep really does tend to me to indicate that he's not doing his job, and thus the trial is as valid as one with no judge at all - which is to say, not.

And, really, if the judge is sleeping, what do you think the jury will think of the testimony being given at that point?
