The Chernobyl containment structure is crumbling? No problem, build a bigger one to contain Chernobyl *and* the original structure.

I can't help but think "and I put it in a box, and I'll put that box in another box, and I'll mail it to myself and when it arrives I'll SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA IT'S BRILLIANT!"

Obviously, that's not the most uh, aesthetic solution, but is there any other way to deal with it?

My understanding is that the core is either too radioactive or there is too much of it to simply dismantle and ship off to a high-level waste disposal facility.

They're also really worried about the old concrete sarcophagus collapsing in on the radioactive site. This would kick a LOT of radioactive dust up into the atmosphere, and if a big enough piece fell over and the winds were wrong, it could actually spread as much fallout as the original disaster.

YEah- So brilliant, they're gonna put it in a GIANT STEEL BOX.. to contain WHAT? The radiation? Ummm NO- all they will end up doing is creating a very nice pressure-slow-cooker that will steam gently in the rains...
Not really anything they CAN do to "Contain" the radiation they set loose that day...

They're not trying to contain radiation. They're trying to contain the radioactive dust that will go everywhere *when*, not if, the Sarcophagus crumbles into the wreckage of the reactor.

AH... well- I wish them luck. Cause it'll be another 10,000 years before they can actually get anyone in there (Besides robots- and even those fry pretty quickly in that many Roentgens) to talk about "Dismantling" it...

I was thinking of posting some version of this (there are a few variants). Which I first saw in the office of a Member of Parliament.
