Matej Kus, an 18 year old Czech biker, was knocked out in an accident on September 9th, 2007 on a speedway in Glasgow.

Before being knocked out, his spoken English was "nonfluent" - he apparently had trouble getting native speakers to understand more than two or three words in a row. He had been struggling to speak English for a while.

For two days after regaining consciousness his English was fluent. He didn't know who he was, where he was, or even that he was Czech, but Matej was chatting easily with the paramedics as they loaded him into the ambulance.

Now, a week later, Matej cannot remember the two days after the accident, but he knows who he is and where he's from. And he once again cannot speak English.

I imagine you'd find that his COMPREHENSION levels hadn't varied and that the blow to the head had temporarily affected his vowel formation.

- I think temporary possession sounds more likely :), you need to comprehend people before you can have an easy chat, and as far as I can remember vowels don't exactly have much to do in Czech either...

That actually reminds me of something i heard from my scoutmaster. One of the Assistant Scoutmasters, when he was a kid, was caught speaking fluent Hawaiian in his sleep, by his parents. Of course, he doesn't actually speak fluent Hawaiian when he's awake....

I'm fairly conversant in German, Arabic and Spanish if I'm inebriated to but not past a certain point.

I spent years attemping to learn each language but never got past a base level of function.
