Public School: Cut your hair, hippy.
Student: My religion requires that I not cut my hair.
Public School: Your religion is fake. If being a Baptist was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for you!

Difficulty: It's not Florida or Ohio.
Bonus: There's a hint in the snippet above.

A former Governor of Texas once said "If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for Texas".

Ok, that was a gut laugh. That sounded like Governor Bush-grade stupid, but my Yahooing has caused me to discover otherwise.

Ma Ferguson, from 1924.

Upon looking it up, to get her name, though, it appears to be misattributed to her.

Oddly enough I just literally 5 minutes ago read the section of Crooked Little Vein which pertains to that quote.

Being a "Baptist" thing, I was gonna go with Alabama myself. Same general area, at least.

Yeah, that's the way I was thinking. Figured the hint was "Baptist," so was thinking "Southern Baptist" and trying to think of which good ol' suth'n state might be the best candidate.

I don't tend to think of Texas as Southern per se, since it's more its own entity. Southwest, at least.

Some days, I hate being right.

Sikhs aren't supposed to cut their hair, either.

I figured he was a Sikh when I saw the original headline. Rastafarian simply didn't occur to me.

I am now incapable of even THINKING the word "Rastafarian" without substituting a P for the first R. Thanks, FSM!

What confuses me is that the dress code requires short hair. Is it just for men? I'm guessing so. I'm kinda surprised this is an issue.

Our dress code requires no hats. Please remove your yarmulke, turban, and khimar.

Still surprised it's an issue?

I seem to recall those coming up in court, with the courts deciding on the side of the Charter.

It's one thing if it's a private school where the parents are electing to send the kid. Most districts in the US do not allow children to school hop between public schools (or at least discourage it).

So it's quite likely that that school is his only option for public education, in which case religiously exclusive dress codes are a definite no no.

Likely.

Usually they require "conservative haircuts" so shaved heads and buzzhawks are out too even though they technically fall under the "short hair" clause.

Here's another guess-the-state one for you, in case you haven't seen it: [state] man accused of cutting friend's house in half with a power saw. It's not religious fuckwittery, just run-of-the-mill insanity, but I think it still counts.

But if you are looking for religious fuckwittery, there's the archbishop who claims Europe is willfully putting AIDS in condoms.
