Quoth Apple: Mod your iPhone, and we'll brick it. Don't mod it, and we'll PROBABLY brick it while we're bricking the modders.

And you paid about three times what you would have paid for equivalent functionality in non-proprietary, non-DRM'd hardware for the privilege of letting them do this to you.

brick, v. tr.: To convert the functionality of a device to that equivalent to the functionality of a brick?

Oh go ahead and give in. There are few enough things to laugh at. (Yes, this is schadenfreude-flavoured laugh, but still...)

I really do try (even if I fail most times) to not be one of those catty PC users that gloat over all of Apple's shortcomings, but gosh it's tough right now. ;)

PCs suck, too. They just suck in reasonably-priced ways that are compatible with the rest of the planet and don't rely on a single hardware and software vendor *allowing* you to continue using what you paid for.

Unless you buy Vista, but Vista is basically Microsoft MacOSX, so you should know better.

Why?

(This isn't a "I doubt you" why, it's a "I really don't know what you're talking about and would like to learn, could you expand a little?" why.)

Mostly because I've been infinitely frustrated, recently, at a couple of my clients who overrode my objections and brought MacBook Pros, paying $3500 for a $1800 set of hardware and an OS that's frankly incapable of playing nicely with *any* of the other equipment in the office. They can't get printer drivers, they can't read even iCal meeting requests that come from a non-Apple platform, even the other Apple platforms can't read Apple's own calendar entries if the time zone is specified on either machine[1], and their mice DON'T HAVE ENOUGH BUTTONS.

Apple hasn't managed to fuck up TCP/IP recently, but that seems to be about it.

Vista is Microsoft's attempt to make an OS that sucks as much as Apple's latest excretion. And they've largely succeeded.

[1]: Anywhere. Specify TZ anywhere in the calendar of *either* client, and *neither* can read the other's calendars.

Wow, that's *special*. You'd think that specifying the time zone would make it easier to sync calendars, since it gives a standard reference.

PS: Vista has driver revocation, where MacOSX has only a single provider of useful drivers. Same difference.

I'll be using XP Pro until it becomes too difficult for me to continue doing so.

Well. Or some new Game I Can't Live Without(tm) comes out exclusively for Vista. :P

I'm really hoping it takes a long, long time for this to happen.

Ive been quite happy with the mac products ive purchased, laptops and ipods. Think theyre great. I will NOT be buying any of their new DRM shit. And apparently, that includes the Iphone, which i was thinking of gettting in the next year or so once the bugs had been worked out. Oh well, my treo still works great.
