Step 1: School bans all bags, sacks, containers, etc, because the school administrators are stupid. Flatly, mindblowingly stupid.
Step 2: Realising this may cause problems for female students for about a week every month, they make an exception: You may carry a purse while you're having your period.
Step 3: Totally predictable hilarity ensues, as everyone now can easily see personal hygiene details on 50% of the student body, AND the school security guards are now *checking* to make sure nobody is "abusing" the right to carry a bag.

Whenever I thought that school administrators have reached the pinnacle of stupidity, they reach a new level of pettiness and insanity that just leaves me speechless.

I think there is value in it, though. Realizing that one is better than one's vice-principal is a crucial rite of passage for the properly educated student. These tampon-wearing protesters (to whom I tip my hat) are doubly privileged in that they can rest assured that they are also better than their principal and a majority of the school board.

The school banned backpacks in the halls this year for two reasons, George said: Student health, because heavy bags could hurt the kids' backs or people could trip on them; and for security concerns, felt nationwide, about concealed weapons.

That's so full of shit. People might trip?! The humanity! And there are places besides bags that weapons can be concealed. If a kid's determined enough, they'll find a way to sneak a weapon into school. I've yet to see convincing statistics supporting the argument that school security measures like banning bags, adding metal detectors, etc. have lowered school violence. Latest I read, these measures have been nothing but show and haven't amounted to a significant reduction in school crime.

Mad props to the kids protesting by wearing sanitary items as part of their outfits. Making purses out of tampon boxes is pretty creative.

school boards are numerous, far flung, and ultimately democratic. but man, asking girls what? props to streaker protest.

I question the wisdom of banning heavy backpacks to protect childrens backs. When the alternative is clutching all your books and binders in your arms (and/or dropping them on your feet) I think you do worse to yourself and your ability to get around during the day.

Mind you, I was one of those nerdy kids who wore her backpack on TWO straps, properly tightened and riding correctly high up on my back behind my shoulderblades instead of bouncing against my butt, making sure the weight was towards my torso instead of the outside of the bag, and for a while I even wore the waist belt for load distribution. (and then that bag broke and I couldn't find another with a waist belt)

I know most students are too dumb/cool to do that.

Now that I think back, my obsession with Cargo pants during late highschool would also have made the whole purse thing irrelevant too (yay pockets). Not that I ever carried a purse, because I had a Backpack of Doooooom instead.

I wondered that, too. There was a lot of emphasis on my high school on carrying FEWER books, because those of us who were in IB/AP in particular found ourselves carrying massive loads of textbooks everywhere, and I think they even increased the break time between classes so students had time to go to lockers and change books.

But banning backpacks for that reason is incredibly stupid. How else are they supposed to carry them.

Now and days many kiddos have packpack with wheels, much like suitcases, which can alleviate most of the "heavy backpack" problem.

Agreed about cargo pants, and inside jacket pockets.

Also, your GURPS icon is fantastic.

Nod. It's one of the best student protests I've heard in a while. It speaks volumes about how upset they are, considering how squicky most teens find menstration to be.

No no Mrs. Crabapple, we don't need metal detectors. Just tell the kids they can't use schoolbags!

They're trying to teach pioneering and knot-tying to the kids. Yeah. That's it. That's the ticket.

The no-backpack thing is just so fucking stupid. I'm so glad my son's (admittedly very small) junior high campus doesn't do that shit. But they actually treat the kids like human beings.

Well, they can start carrying them in hidden pockets underneath clothing ... which are also quite convenient for stashing weapons.

Good news, if you get fired from the police department you can look forward to a life of asking underage girls personal questions about thier lady-parts.
