Sony's been schizo for years in this way. The hardware division wants to design cool stuff that let's you do damn near anything you can think of, not only without hindering you, but actively trying to make it easy. The media whores on the other side? Those fuckers need to be taken out back, lined up, and shot.
Just as an example, any of Sony's camcorders that do DV will take an analog signal from a Macrovision protected source (ie, Sony Pictures DVDs), and put the timing marks back in the frames, allowing it to be copied easily, passing it through to any of its outputs. They put a time base corrector in their camcorders just to piss off the media guys, if I had to guess. There's no other reason for it to be there.
I wish the engineers would take the fucking company back, Sony used to be cool. I have a bunch of older Sony gear and I've always been extremely pleased with the reliability and quality.
Jesus. Do they even realize you can't sue your way into a working business model? The more they keep this up the more it turns the options into lockdown or free - when only the middle ground can make money. I guess they're at the "if we can't have it our way, then wreck it all" stage.
I'm in Canada, where the courts have consistently held that there's absolutely nothing illegal in the slightest about file sharing, and I *still* exemplify their ideal customer: I download, delete what I don't like, and buy what I like.
However, Sony are clueless assholes. I won't spend money on Sony, for anything, ever. I will pay extra to buy non-Sony hardware. I won't go to Sony Pictures movies. In this way, I am no longer their ideal customer, I suspect.
I'm just attempting to get them to close the branches I don't like via market pressures. Push people to buy certain hardware, avoid certain media formats, etc. Hopefully, if enough people do it, they'll see profits in the non-fucked areas and close the non-performers.
