Bush, for the first time ever, attempts to halt execution.

For bonus points: It's a state conviction that even his usurped office has no authority over, he cites rulings from multiple courts that he's previously said have no authority over such matters when they disagree with him, AND the guy to be executed's name is "Medellin" which immediately makes me, even though it's almost certainly purely a coincidence, think of Bush's cocaine-fueled past.

So, *how* is this guy a personal friend of Bush or someone who pulls Bush's chain, and/or what damaging information do he and his supporters have on Bush? Bush *never* acts without one of those things.

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- To put it bluntly, Texas wants President Bush to get out of the way of the state's plan to execute a Mexican for the brutal killing of two teenage girls...

The president wants to enforce a decision by the International Court of Justice that found the convictions of Medellin and 50 other Mexican-born prisoners violated their rights to legal help as outlined in the 1963 Vienna Convention."

Attempt to win brownie points with Hispanic groups?

I mean, it would be a totally worthless attempt that wouldn't possibly overshadow the current GOP talking points on immigration and would be used on the wrong guy, who doesn't seem to deserve much sympathy, but totally worthless gestures that send mixed messages are the kind Bush is best at.

But then again, Bush was actually in favor of more open borders in the first place, at odds with his own party. Hmm.

Seconded on Bush's tendency to pick non-helpful issues at bad times.

The International Court of Justice is the exact same court he has frequenty said has no jurisdiction in other cases and one I'm pretty sure he refused to sign at least one treaty involving the ICJ.

So I think it's a political move that way - honor it this one time as a pretext for ignoring it the rest of the time. Which doesn't make a lot of sense but that seems to be how they roll in the Bush admin-stay-shun.
