I know people are dumb, but it seems to me that attacking someone who has a large, loyal, and very protective animal with them goes above and beyond the call of stupidity.
Are there really people out there who have never seen a dog's "protect the pack leader" instinct start to take over? (It's very impressive, in an "Oh Shit!" kind of way.) The growling/snarling wasn't enough of a clue as to what would happen if they continued on this road?
It's possible that her dog was off doing doggy things and not particularly visible.
When I was a teenager, my family used to walk our dogs in a park that was a bit of a haunt for perves. My sister was approached by someone one day, while Tavish was off at the other end of a football oval. Nobody can quite figure out how it happened, but he must have recognised her uncomfortable body language and, suddenly, 40kg of snarling Gordon Setter was interposed between her and the other person.
The sad thing is if they do catch him he'll probably sue to have the dog put down as "a menace" and then sue her for reckless endangerment, and this world is so screwed up that he'll probably win.
