Leland Stanford bet someone that there was a moment in a horse's gallop when all four hooves were off the ground, and hired a photographer to prove it.

That the result just happened to lead directly to the invention of the motion picture was strictly a side effect.

Very cool! (Wait- Does this mean I can blame things like "Gigli" on this guy? >:D)

I have a book called "Shy Boy" by Monty Roberts with a similar shot in it of a Mustang at full gallop, and he's flying- all four hooves tucked up.
