Canada's Interim Placeholder Government decides once again that sane and humane policy should take a back seat to ideological purity.

As [livejournal.com profile] mightygodking put it: "Because god knows, everybody ever sentenced to death completely deserved it and the state never makes any mistakes in this regard. Especially not the United States."

It is really beginning to irk me that the Liberals chose Stephane "I-have-absolutely-no-personality" Dion as a leader, because let's face it, he will *never* win an election, and we're going to be stuck with the interim placeholder government for that much longer because of it.
At least when Chretien was butchering the English language, it was entertaining. (And, y'know, he laid the smackdown on that protester guy, which is always a cool thing when your PM does it himself.)

Given the choice between an American academic who is soft on torure and whose views vary from day to day, the man who led the NDP to a stunning 6% approval rate in the early 1990s and the nerd, the nerd was clearly the best choice of the ones available.

The Ig got upset when Rae refused to play softball during the leadership debates. What does he think Harper would do?

I'm not saying it was the wrong choice - I suppose I should have phrased that more along the lines of I wish this wasn't the best choice. Or if he could just grow a spine or a personality already. I don't mind the nerd part (honestly, I self-identify as such most of the time) so much as the wishy-washy.

Perhaps The Ig (I like that name) was hoping that he wouldn't be torpedoed by people who might later be his supporters? Too much time spent as an Academic, probably.

Yes, but they picked the wrong nerd. Gerard Kennedy was the pick, not Dion - who's only the leader because the Grits think they can squeak out a victory in Quebec with a Quebecois leader. Since that's rapidly being proven to be crap...

I thought it was more that they thought they couldn't without a leader from Quebec.

Gah, you think you have an absolute. You think that one thing the civilised world (well, bar one, the usual suspect) can agree on is the barbarism of the death penalty. It's one of those things that shouldn't be debated, shouldn't even be considered for debate
