Something I said elsewhere deserves, I think, it's own forum.

In regards to the new Terminator TV show, I said
Of course, Fox *is* going to cancel this show early. They've discovered a working model with geeks: Make a sci-fi show that looks good, for a low budget. Cash in on the immediate hype and the short-term viewers. Cash in on the DVD sales. Cancel the show before the creator, writer, and stars can claim that their work is worth more money than the initial outlay. Repeat.
Am I right? Wrong?

Discuss.

The question I have is, why pitch to Fox in the first place, then? I mean, I dunno anything about tv studios at all, or how they work, but if Fox does this repeatedly (which they do, I will agree), then why bother with them? Why not pitch your show elsewhere?

Because the other networks won't touch it - after all, sci-fi shows keep failing, and sci-fi movies don't make back their initial money on release.

Pity. If only there were some sort of... "Sci-Fi Channel".

(I'm being snide at SciFi for being stupid as a tv station, not you.)

Um.

Theory #2: They're going to cancel it because it's going to suck.

Also possible. However, they keep *taking* these sci-fi shows, meaning they're making money on them in the short term.

Not sayin', just sayin'. If there's one thing I'd bet cash money on right now, it's that this maggot-ridden, crushed-to-a-pulp rotting franchise isn't going to produce any more gems.

Amen. If it were, they wouldn't have grabbed one of the current Princesses of Scifi and plastered her all over the posters.

Exactly what qualifies as an entire TV station jumping the shark?

Pretty sure Fox never was a really good station in the first place.

No no, I know. I'm saying Fox has done so many things in the past (including this most recent one with Summer Glau) that I'm not sure what else they could do.

I fail to see how this series could not be awesome. Summer Glau is playing a Terminator. There was a strip about this. (http://www.xkcd.com/311/)

Apart from the fact that Summer Glau *sucks* at action and is in desperate need of a stunt double who can actually make fights look realistic, sure.

Seconded. Summer Glau fighting makes for decent cinema, so long as you're willing to accept that she weighs 4 lbs, can't fight worth a damn, and what you're seeing is not a fight so much as a choreographed, fictional kicking of as much fictional ass as can fit on a screen.

Clint Eastwood, Charlton Heston, Harvey Keitel, Steve McQueen, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris and Jet Li could each kick the piss out of Summer Glau.

I think it's most prevalent among scifi geeks than most other viewer sets, though -- just because we tend to do the stations' 'viral marketing' for them much quicker and more enthusiastically. Hell, I think the only real rival we have in that regard are teenage girls re: pop idols.

They did the same thing to Arrested Development, and killed Futurama because Matt Groening wouldn't sell them the rights. Fuck FOX.

You said "Futurama", which implies that you like Matt Groening.

And no, The Simpsons was never good. It was always completely worthless. It is anti-comedy.

I have never seen a Simpsons joke that hasn't been done somewhere else, better, first. The Simpsons is total, irredeemable crap. It has never been anything else, ever.

Brisco County, Jr.
Dr. Who.
The Office.
House, M.D.
DEADWOOD.

(were they not out at the time? Who cares? The fact of The Simpsons being unoriginal and painfully unfunny is not changed by the presence or lack of competition. The Simpsons is still unoriginal and painfully unfunny. And I still have *never* seen a joke on The Simpsons that I can't place somewhere else, better, first.)

At this point I question your claim to have actually seen it- though it's possible you've seen it in the past... oh, eight years, since it wen tto shit.

I, meanwhile, was unaware that any of those shows were comedies other than the Office- which is excellent, and made by one of the guys who was making the Simpsons back when it was funny. Of course, maybe that's your point. That, or you're reading as carefully as you were initially.

I watched some of the original Simpsons episodes, when it first hit TV.

Since then, I've seen it, a few episodes a season, defined as "the best" of a season by Simpsons fans, every season so far. For the past TWENTY FUCKING YEARS. (give or take one year

Not ONE original joke that I couldn't place to an earlier non-Simpsons source.

Not ONE moment that wasn't funnier where I'd seen it the first time.

The Simpsons is ass. It has always been ass. It will never be other than ass.

And those shows may not have been comedies, but they were and are fucking hilarious, in comparison to The Simpsons.
