Were there people on those boats? or were they just bouy markers?

Neither. Those are real ships, with no people on them.

They wanted to know how a battleship would stand up to a nuke.

Most of them were old US warships or captured German or Japanese vessels, including the aircraft carriers Saratoga and Independence. Here's a full list of the vessels involved in both Bikini tests (http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq76-5.htm), and what happened to them afterwards.

Why yes, I am a dork. :)

I know it's Wrong, but I love the look of atomic bombs going off. I think that it's....elegant.

Of course, the fallout and debris caused by the shock wave...not so much.

I agree; it's the same fascination as with a tornado.

-- Steve actually put that flick on his Christmas list... his VHS recording (from a TVOntario broadcast) is just too staticky on a hi-def TV.

FYI, [livejournal.com profile] jsbowden's YouTube clip is a lo-res conversion from that movie. (Killer soundtrack, if you'll pardon the pun.)

-- Steve should've checked before posting... or ponied up to 6A for the option to edit.

I do too. I also thought that the World Trade Center was elegant too.

It's a veritable Strangelovian montage of atomic bomb glory! Of course, the last one was the best one.

I think I know the feeling. I once had a coworker draw an utter blank on the name Dachau.
