If it was moose you probably wouldn't have seen it coming. You'd just suddenly be dead and not know the hows and whys of it.
Even if you did somehow manage to see a moose, breaking eye contact and slowly backing away would accomplish nothing. Being within moosing range has already ensured your complete and utter destruction.
