I'm amazed that qualifies as a "now." A friend of mine told me about that a couple of years ago. (Specifically, she wrote it into a scene she was writing...can't remember what for.)

States in the middle of the US that are generally things that travelers or tourists fly over when they're going where they're going (i.e., one coast or the other).
> Is "Canadian" a racial slur for someone acting/being too "white"/fair > skinned?
Nope. It's a word used in place of "nigger" when using that particular slur would get you in trouble.
Most people in the Flyover States have never been to Canada. Never thought about going to Canada. Canada is just as foreign as Nigeria. (I've known far too many of them at college & grad school.)
I even took some friends over to Windsor (very easy to do from Detroit, pre-9/11), just to prove that Canada really does exist and you really can get there.
It was the best I could do, given the circumstances. I would have loved to have taken them to Toronto, but this was one of those Friday-night-hey-let's-go-to-Canada things.
IIRC, we went over, had coffee and a donut at a Tim Horton's, and went back to the States.
All things considered, I think that would be the 15-minute tour I'd choose for the "Canada? Isn't that in Africa?" types.
Timmies are usually a pretty good cross-section of the Canadian population, nothing is going to be radically different, and if you do it at a peak hour they can see how civil we can be under pressure. ;)
Well, great. This means that I can no longer hurl friendly abuse at our neighbors to the north without someone thinking that I'm secretly in the KKK. That's just peachy!
Depends on how you count the flyover states... there's some who count fifty of them.
Given that I'm occasionally in VA and NC, it's not impossible that I run into some of this, although even though someone commented that this has been going on for years, I haven't heard it yet.

But I've never even heard a white supremacist out here say "nigger," and I've met more than a few.

Windsor's sidewalks roll up after 9 pm. Figuratively speaking, of course.
