Oh- ... Now THAT is cool! I wonder if they can put up multiple kites to harness more energy? They point out that adding a mast and sails would be impractical, yes, but what about three kites?
Ah the natural evolution of the Clipper....

The efficiency comes from the fact that at height, there is a smoother and more stable wind. Two kites, even side-by-side, would introduce turbulence to each other and definitely would if one were in front of the other.

It would also make it much more difficult to tack with them.

Far better to merely increase the size of the one kite.

If there were a way to stack one on top of the other, that would be far better.

Aren't box kites kind of stacked kites?

Yep. Now make them really freaking big, make the cables strong enough that they don't snap under 40 mph winds, and make them computer-controllable and robot-stowable.

Hmm, OK- I can see that.
Stacking.. They do something similar with competition kites, don't they? I mean- there's anywhere from 3 to 7 kites all hooked up in tandem... I remember getting dragged along the sand by one of those, years ago.

Make the cables strong enough to withstand the increase in force/tension and you have a winner, from what I have seen on the various videos available.

Excellent, that's what I like to see. Logical, sane, sustainable designs that make win win situations. *thumbs up*
