Further porn: Also in formation is the SR-71 Blackbird; However, the Blackbird transited the frame so fast that - even at this shutter speed - it registered only as an exposure irregularity, removed in post-processing.
Ah the A-10 Warthog. That is a vicious piece of modern (if slightly dated) engineering. If ever anyone wanted to put wings on a tank, they need only look at that plane.
I dunno. I was always a fan (for the WWII era, anyways) of the Hellcat. I forget the numerical description, but I remember it being a plane that was specifically designed to combat the Japanese Zero. It had the armor and firepower of the P-51, but with better maneuverability. Quite the beautiful plane, but was implemented in the war only a year or so before we figured out the jet engine.
I don't know about that. The A-10 has limited air-to-air capability. Would a Sidewinder be able to get a lock on a piston powered plane like a Mustang? The Mustang would have a hard time taking down the A-10 without some lucky hits.
The A-10 wouldn't need the sidewinder. A one-second burst from that GAU-8 would do it, I think.
The mustang's .50's are lightweight in comparison, but remember that the A-10's armour is meant to protect it from groud fire. A good volley from above and behind could take both the A-10's engines out and/or the pilot. Nevertheless the A-10 is most likely sturdier over-all.
I'm not sure who could out-turn who, but I suspect the A-10 can pull more G's. Their speed ranges are surprisingly similar.
I think the Hog's got the advantage but the 'Stang's got a shot at it.
There's no doubt the Gatling gun is extremely powerful, but I wonder if an A-10 could get lined up on the Mustang. No doubt a hit would be fatal, but that gun (and the targeting and training) are designed to hit low-speed land targets. There's no way a Mustang could outrun a Warthog and no way to outclimb it, but if he can stay out of the line of the cannon, there's only 20 seconds of ammo. It'd be a long twenty seconds, though.
Still haven't seen an F-22 in vivo, but I can say with first-hand knowledge that the rest do put on a good show when I'm out courting melanomas.
