[livejournal.com profile] e_apraksina has a lovely picture of a cathedral in 1943, with everything around it bombed.

However, she's got that labelled "Naples Italy 1943", and take a look at that picture - that's obviously not Naples. That's the Kölner Dom, in Cologne, Germany.

Can anyone help me out with the information in Russian?

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] lpetrazickis did it, translating my comment into Russian, and so now all is satisfied. Thanks!

photograph good, beautiful it is small: фотография хорошая, красивого мало

4 this it had in the form. To kat': я это и имел в виду. Кать

beautifully they bombed: красиво бомбили

Re: 4 this it had in the form. To kat': Re: я это и имел в виду. Кать

Pattern of the bombing: Узор бомбометания

My Russian is rusty and minimal, but I agree with babelfish/squizzlzilla for the ones I recognize.

But I agree that is Kolner Dom. I'm actually surprised how strong the recognition is.

The first reply to your comment "theweaselking говорит что это Кёльнский собор в Кёльне." translates to "theweaselking says this is the Cologne (Sobor - Cathedral?) in Cologne."

I can't figure out the second one. Babelfish has it as "I will not undertake to dispute, but so it was signed".

"I'm not arguing with Weaselking, but the picture's attribution (or maybe what's on the back) is "Naples Italy 1943" - ?

Not that people haven't already done this for you, but here is everything as of a few minutes ago.

Comment from [livejournal.com profile] gavniloff: it is very beautiful
Response from [livejournal.com profile] e_apraksina: photograph good, beautiful it is small
Response from [livejournal.com profile] gavniloff, subject line "4 this it had in the form. To kat": beautifully they bombed
Response from [livejournal.com profile] samp1e: "Pattern of the bombing" :)

Comment from [livejournal.com profile] theweaselking, subject line "That is not Naples. That is Cologne.": I'm sorry, I don't speak Russian.

Are you sure that's Naples? Because that cathedral, and the position of the train station, tell me that's the Dom in Koln, Germany.

Here is a map that makes it clear:

Response from [livejournal.com profile] lpetrazickis: [livejournal.com profile] theweaselking speaks that this Cologne cathedral in Cologne.
Response from [livejournal.com profile] e_apraksina: I will not undertake to dispute, but so it was signed

Comment from [livejournal.com profile] dmytre: After all the arrangement of cathedral, station and river, yes even the form of cathedral itself more greatly resemble Cologne.
Response from [livejournal.com profile] e_apraksina: it means so to eat

Comment from [livejournal.com profile] malizhzh: this of germanium after bombardments allies known photo city I do not remember.

Babelfish is full of goofy translations... :-)

I can handle Babelfish. I was just hoping somebody could pass along a "But that's not Naples. That's Cologne" - in German, which [livejournal.com profile] lpetrazickis did for me.

I was at a gorgeous medieval cathedral in Vienna once. Admiring the statuary, the tile roof with the Stratsburg eagle on it, did not have time to go in the catacombs. Happened to go out a different entrance (a small side one) and found the newpaper article that (via pictures) obviously depicted the same cathedral a totally bombed out shell in WWII. I could not believe it. It looked very much as if it were still intact from the middle ages.

The Dom specifically was not bombed at all in WWII - a near-miss resulted in one of the front towers still having a different colour of stone because the repairs haven't weathered, but that was an accident.

The Germans took down all the stained glass windows and put them in storage, and the Allies specifically did *not* bomb the Dom because it's massive, asymmetrical, and could be seen for miles from any direction - meaning for any pilot anywhere near Cologne, one look at the Dom was enough to tell you your exact position AND direction.

They left it intact as a landmark so they could hit everything else.

So it survived the war pretty well.
