Because everyone in Texas is totally rational and would never, ever misuse a firearm, it's a great thing that anyone can have a gun at any time and that makes us all safer.
(Short version: Furniture delivery people deliver furniture. Homeowner wants them to remove boots. Delivery guys say they can't do that for insurance reasons, but they're wearing big overshoes to protect carpets and floors. Homeowner pulls gun, demands compliance.)

Date: 2008-03-26 04:59 pm (UTC)A man's home is his castle down here, son. If you don't like what s/he's telling you to do, you suck it up and comply or you leave. True, pulling a gun WAS a bit rude, but there are several things you absolutely do NOT fuck with a Texan on:
- Their hat
- Their dog
- Their significant other
- Their hardwood floors
Also, from the article?
While the deliverymen say that the woman never pointed the gun directly at them, they decided that running away was the better part of valour and left.
Pansies.

Date: 2008-03-26 05:13 pm (UTC)[1] I think I've accidentally come up with the first two lines of a country song.
[2] which is a reference to an internet anecdote which I really need to find again. Short version: Gamer, after an all night RPG session, is woken up at Ohgod-oclock by missionaries. Hilarity ensues.
Bonus points if someone can find me a link.

It's true. It is, on the other hand, much less of a sin to fuck with a Texan over carpeting, and this can be seen by the calm and responsible manner in which she took her complaints about the company to the delivery men and then brought out a gun.
(Points to the article for distinguishing between a tiff and a kerfuffle.)

Date: 2008-03-26 05:39 pm (UTC)Jesus jumping chipmunk CHRIST! If someone carrying a gun is such a threat, these guys must live in mortal fear ALL THE TIME!

Date: 2008-03-26 05:29 pm (UTC)"Take off your boots!"
"Can't do that, ma'am. Insurance reasons. We do have these nice protective overshoes to keep your floors dry and unscuffed."
"You guys suck! I've got a gun!"
Even in Texas, that's a fucked up sequence of events, and it's perfectly reasonable to tell the person you can't do that and why.

Date: 2008-03-26 05:45 pm (UTC)You seem to have misconstrued my earlier arguments.
My earlier arguments were not discussions over whether Texans should have guns. Any argument on that point is as fucking moot as arguing about whether the ocean should contain fish. We have them. They ain't gonna get taken away at any point in my lifetime by any government or law, and I'd bet my house, car and guitar on it.
My earlier arguments were that no, right to carry doesn't mean a society devolves into the wild west.
In response, you have posted a single isolated incident involving a situation where, if I read between the lines right, a single woman at home, outnumbered by large deliverymen, brandished a firearm (without firing it) in order to get them out of her house.
Try harder!

Date: 2008-03-26 09:54 pm (UTC)you're obviously confusing us with another state.
Given that you're probably a texan, though, that's to be expected.
Don't worry, I'm typing this very slowly because I know you can't read very fast.

(PS: It's likely that company policy against removing the footware is probably in compliance with a health and safety requirement. I mean, they do have occupational safety requirements in Texas too, right?)
