This is Republican congressional candidate Tony Zirkle, speaking before a group of his supporters in Chicago,
at what appears to be a quaint buddhist festival.

The topic of his speech?

The victimisation of "white Christian women" at the hands of blacks and jews in the pornography industry.

Apparently nobody told him that white women pretty much run the porn industry.

Granted, they never used to, but any more? Holy crap, you can't get dental as a many in the porn industry unless you're willing to take a thermal detonator in the rear.

I did not know my eyes could actually bug out. And yet, that's what it felt like.

I haven't slept more than 45 minutes in the last 36 hours, and suddenly I'm wide awake.

...so has the Onion closed up shop yet?

...and then it got worse.

When asked if he was a Nazi or sympathized with Nazis or white supremacists, Zirkle replied he didn't know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it.

"This is just a great opportunity for me to witness," he said, referring to his message and his Christian belief.

He also told WIMS radio in Michigan City that he didn't believe the event he attended included people necessarily of the Nazi mindset, pointing out the name isn't Nazi, but Nationalist Socialist Workers Party.

It could easily be the first time ever since WWII. But nonetheless this celebration was kind of weird for both sides.

Yup! He's a proud Republican, who says these guys CAN'T be "Nazi"s, because they're The National Socialist Workers Party, and calling them Nazis is just unfair and pejorative!

The glittery "Happy Birthday!" banner tops it right off for me.

Does it make me a terrible cynic that I'm not surprised in the least?

Yep, the Blues Brtohers.

The get stuck in a traffic jam caused by the Illinois Nazis having a rally on a bridge.

After they utter the above line Elwood guns the Bluesmobile and runs the Nazia off the bridge into the river

To be fair, he's *a* candidate for the Republican nomination for that seat, not THE Republican candidate for that seat. Apparently there is a primary system at play here as well - which in this case is clearly a very good thing.

Even mainstream Republicans aren't this stupid.......

True, but this guy got 30 percent of the vote in the Republican primary. Even for Republicans that's pretty appalling.

That's The Crazification Factor (http://kfmonkey.blogspot.com/2005/10/lunch-discussions-145-crazification.html) at work, David. That's the same percentage of people who think Bush is the messiah, who think James Dobson is sane, and who think Fox News shows news.

30% of the USA are *completely batshit insane, with absolutely no contact with reality, ever.*

Well, yes. But it's understandable if you know that the district in question is heavily African-American and Democratic. So, there are not a lot of Republicans in that district, and even fewer Republicans who would bother voting in the congressional primary, since whoever wins the right to go against Jesse Jackson, Jr. is going to be a joke candidate, anyway. So, 30% of the Republican vote is probably, like, 30 people.
