I am not so convinced. People in developing countries don't have deep pockets. If they lose their jobs because they can no longer export to an America in deep recession, they will prioritize food over driving.
It is in the rich countries people will continue to drive anyway, because they cannot imagine NOT driving. In Europe, carbon tax long ago raised gas prices in some nations to double those of the US, and people just kept driving as if nothing had happened. They have deep pockets and the changes will come gradually, as people start considering fuel economy when they look for their next car, or factor in the price of driving to work when they choose which home to buy.
I'm not impressed. I don't know about the in-depth part of the report, but the article completely ignores the amount of oil that the world holds as long as you don't mind spending $40 to get it into the barrel, and assumes no development in biofuel technology or algaculture.
Heh, and now the conspiracy theorist in me is wondering if our current ass-headed strategy is really a cunning plan to drain the Arabian peninsula as quickly as possible so that it can stop being the capstone of global security.
This was related to me yesterday, in a sort of sensationalistic, "ZOMG, they're saying we'll be paying two bucks a litre for gas in 2012!" way, and my response was, "...what, you don't think we'll be paying that well before then?"
