I suspect that the publisher is not being paid for reprints due to their own error.

Hmmm, the link seemed to imply that it was the school's error, it said
"Westlake High School officials misspelled "education" on the diplomas"...

It did, but that's because they distributed misspelled diplomas.

"Principal Timothy Freeman says he sent back the diplomas once to correct another error. When the diplomas came back, no one bothered to check things they thought were right the first time."

I was going to guess Texas. We went in for an awards ceremony at our son's school this week and had to wear visitor tags. All the visitor tags had the wrong dates and mucked up spelling.
