They also used this idea in an excellent Australian animated film, Harvie Krumpet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382734/). Traditional stop-motion claymation, narrated by Geoffrey Rush. Won an Oscar (Best Short Film, Animated) in 2004. Go see it. (/plug)
