I always prefer expressing it as "The gun is loaded. The gun is ALWAYS loaded. The gun with no mag, an open chamber, and the safety on? Is loaded, just lying about it."
I would dislike regulatory "gun control" much more if the gun owners as a whole practiced just a little more of it themselves.
Pretty much. One should never point a gun, regardless of if they believe it to be empty at the time, at anything they're not actively intending to shoot, with the intended consequence being death. It's just common sense when dealing a deadly weapon.
I disagree with the 'as a whole bit'. I'd say as a whole gun owners are a reasonable lot, at least from my experience. It's just the nitwits that make the news, as they're the ones putting new holes in their faces. 'Area man has 10 guns for 50 yrs without any harmful effects' doesn't exactly make the news. 'OMG he has a butt-face from shooting himself in the face' does.
Ya know, I really object to being lumped in with an idiot like that. I knew at the age of 6 that you NEVER point a gun at yourself or another person. (I later came to understand the 'unless you want to kill them' caveat.) I probably knew younger than that; but I remember knowing then, because the teenage sons of some friends-of-my-parents almost shot each other because they found a gun in the house and were fucking around. And 6 year old me, upon joining the adults to run and see what the shot was, informed the teenage boys 'wow, that was dumb, even I know never to point a gun at a person!'. So, yeah, just cos some gun owners are idiots does not mean the majority are. It just means you only hear about the minority percent who do stupid shit.
Canada: More guns, several orders of magnitude less gun violence. The problem has nothing to do with the guns and everything to do with who *has* the guns.
On the other hand, we are adult enough to carry handguns. As in small guns for the hand. Because we worry about intruders, instead of moose or polar bears or penguin hordes or whatev the fuck it is you Canucks worry about.
The problem is, actually, not the people doing dumb shit. It's that the majority of the *representatives* of the sane, safe, gun-owning public[1], defined as the people who do all the talking and the campaigning, are objectively crazy.
Nobody asks you or Jay about your opinion on gun legislation. They ask Charlton Fucking Heston.[2]
But you're right, I've lumped a hell of a lot of people who don't deserve to be there in with the crazies, and I shouldn't have. I apologise.
Let me rephrase that statement: Of the people I see most commonly complaining about their right to bear arms being infringed, I wouldn't trust most of them with an air rifle. I find the problem to be of a "get off my side, you idiots"[3] nature - the people who are loudest about their right to have guns are the people I want having the fewest guns, because said group of people are STUPID and DANGEROUS.
[1]: Of which I am one. This is not the point.
[2]: Well, they used to. Now they've just taken his guns, according to the deal he agreed to.
[3]: Well, not exactly "my side". I'm very much of the opinion that the majority of guns shouldn't exist because they serve no purpose beyond being used on other human beings, and A) this shouldn't happen B) self-defense against this should not be necessary. And while I'm at it I want a pony. My desire for fewer people[4] to be shot has no relevance to reality.
Now they've just taken his guns, according to the deal he agreed to. I loled so hard I sprayed cake on my laptop screen and scared the cats. :D Obliged for the apology, and more or less agreement otherwise.
