You'd have to have the saw revved up pretty goddamn fast and come in at your neck at the right angle with a lot of force in order to completely sever your own head. I don't think it's likely the guy did it to himself.

That wouldn't work. You can get electric chainsaws so it's not for that reason. But a chainsaw needs a fair bit of force applied to cut through something substancial. I really doubt the weight of the chainsaw would be enough. Enough to slice open his jugular and bleed to death - yes, but not enough to decapitate him.
